Mary L. (Kennedy) Toomey

Mary L. (Kennedy) Toomey, 77, of Belmont and Somerville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 3, 2023. Mary was born to Matthew Kennedy and Mary (Davis) Kennedy on December 7, 1945 in Cambridge, MA. She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School in Somerville and received her nursing diploma at Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in Dorchester. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Boston College and later entered the adult nurse practitioner program there, graduating with a Master of Science in Nursing. She worked for the City of Cambridge at Cambridge Hospital for over 20 years, where she was a nurse manager of the outpatient clinics. Later in her career, she worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as a per diem nurse. Beloved wife of 42 years to the late Dr. Timothy J. Toomey Jr. of Cambridge. Loving mother of Dr. Timothy J. Toomey III and his wife Dr. Nicole Cimbak of Boston. Sister of Matthew Kennedy of Somerville and the late Sheila Tobin of Cambridge, Margaret McDaid and her husband Anthony McDaid of Somerville. Loving aunt of Nancy J. (Tobin) Enos, her husband John Enos, and their daughter Julie Enos of Arlington, Timothy McDaid of Somerville, Kathryn McDaid of Medford, Matthew McDaid of Medford and the late Michael Tobin of Tewksbury and Kellie McDaid of Somerville. Also survived by many devoted grandnieces and nephews. Mary loved to travel, especially to Ireland, and enjoyed golfing with her friends. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau (International Honor Society of Nursing) and an Affiliate of the Order of Malta, with whom she made a pilgrimage to Lourdes. She volunteered through Belmont Hill School, Newton Country Day School, and staffed the Cathedral Cares Clinic of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston.

Funeral from the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Rd., Belmont on Tuesday April 11th at 9:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Peter Church, 100 Concord Ave, Cambridge. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Monday April 10th from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.
