Maureen Griffith Obituary

Maureen (Fitzgerald) (Driscoll) Griffith, 80, passed away peacefully on Monday evening March 28, 2022, surrounded by family at her daughter's home in Bedford.

Maureen leaves behind her daughter Annmarie Vaughan and her husband Kevin of Bedford; her son Michael Driscoll and his wife Nancy Anne of Shrewsbury; her grandchildren, Sean Driscoll, Michael, Brendan and Katherine Vaughan; her siblings, Nora Broderick and her husband PJ of West Roxbury, Liam Fitzgerald and his wife Doreen, John Fitzgerald and his wife Betty, and Bernadette Hughes and her husband Vincent, all of County Monaghan Ireland, many cousins, nephews, nieces, grand-nieces and grand-nephews in the United States, Ireland and Northern Ireland as well as many close friends. She was predeceased by her ex-husband Leo Driscoll and husband James Griffith.

Maureen was born on August 12, 1941 on her family's farm, Racaulfield, near Clones, County Monaghan, Ireland. She was the first of five children born to her parents Michael and Teresa Fitzgerald. From a young age, Maureen had an independent nature and a thirst for education which led her to leave her beloved family farm, always referred to as “home”, at the age of 17 to attend nursing school in Liverpool, England. She spent six years there training and working and was so grateful for the opportunity it provided. She cherished her time in England.

Maureen’s next adventure was in 1965 when she was recruited to come to America to work as a nurse. She landed in Boston and hit the ground running, working in many hospitals and nursing homes throughout the Boston area and of course attending Irish dances in her free time, which were plentiful then. It was at one of those dances that she met Leo Driscoll. They married in 1968 and started a family, living in Mission Hill and West Roxbury before settling in Belmont. Maureen also spent many years working at the Middlesex County courthouse in Cambridge. It was there in 1984 that she met her second husband, Jimmy. They married in 1986 and enjoyed 20 years together.

Maureen’s true Golden Years started when her grandchildren were born. Sean, Michael, Brendan and Katherine provided her with immense joy. She enjoyed them so much and spoiled them relentlessly - loving every minute of it. Nana, as she was known, leaves them with cherished memories and she will be sorely missed.

Maureen’s work ethic and strength were some of her defining attributes. Those qualities carried forward as she battled Alzheimer's disease, which eventually took her life. Her lifelong perseverance and unyielding determination served as a great example to her children Annmarie and Michael who say, “Rest in Peace, Mom. Your fight is over. Your work is finished. Well done!” In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association 309 Waverley Oaks Rd, Waltham, MA 02452. https://www.alz.org/
