Prof. Dr. Ulrich Petersen of Belmont, on Thursday, November 17, 2017. Ulrich died in his home surrounded by his loving family, just two weeks short of his 90th birthday. Predeceased by his first wife, Edith Martensen and son, Armin, Ulrich is survived by his beloved wife, Eileen (Bourque), who for 35 years provided love, devotion and respect in all aspects of their life together. He was the loving father of Erich Petersen (Nancy), Heidi Loh (Dennis), Thomas Bourque (Sun Ok) James Bourque (Akiko), and Valerie Sedaghat (Reza) and brother of Richard Petersen of Lima, Peru. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild as well as extended family in Germany, Peru and Canada.

 

Ulrich was born on December 1, 1927 in Negritos, Peru, the son of Georg and Harriet (Bluhme) Petersen of Germany. He studied mining engineering at the National University of Engineers in Lima (1945-1949) and worked with the Peruvian Geological Survey and the National Institute for Mining Research and Sponsorship. Between 1951and 1963 Ulrich worked for Cerro de Pasco Corporation as its Chief Geologist. During this period he obtained his Master and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. In 1963 Ulrich was invited to join the faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, becoming the H.C. Dudley Professor of Economic Geology and Head of the Concentration of Environmental Science and Public Policy. In addition, he was a private consultant for the Buenaventura mining company in Peru and many other mining companies, as well as non-governmental organizations and a visiting professor at universities in Germany and the United States

 

A celebration of Ulrich's life will take place at the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Rd., BELMONT, MA, Monday, November 20th from 4:00-7:00pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 929 Concord Turnpike, ARLINGTON, MA 02476 on Tuesday, November 21st at 10:00am with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, Ulrich would have been grateful for donations to the Villa La Paz Foundation at http://www.villalapazfoundation.org.
