Peter P. Rogers

Peter Rogers, beloved husband of Suzanne Ogden, passed away in Cambridge, February 8, 2018. The cause of death was a gastrointestinal bleed. He was 80.

Peter was an esteemed colleague who conducted groundbreaking research in the management of water and other natural resources, population studies, land use planning, energy and environmental systems, and sustainable development, particularly in developing countries. He advised and mentored hundreds of students and scholars from throughout the world over his career. He was devoted to his students, his family, and his career. These were what brought him pleasure, and joy, throughout his life.

The eighth of nine siblings, Peter was born and raised in Liverpool, England. He grew up with his family on the grounds of a nunnery, where he and his 5 brothers served as altar boys. For high school he attended St. Edward's College and then received a degree in Engineering from the University of Liverpool. Subsequently he came to the United States for a master’s degree at Northwestern University, followed by a PhD at Harvard University. He served his entire career as the Gordon McKay Professor of Environmental Engineering at Harvard, with his primary appointment in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

He was survived by his wife Suzanne, his two sons Christopher and Justin, his step children Henry and Lydia, and 5 grandchildren.

A mass for Peter will be held at 10:00 on Tuesday, February 20th at the Church of St. Paul’s in Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to support Parkinson’s research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
