Morris Abraham Chomitz

Morris (‘Maish’, ‘Morry’) Abraham Chomitz, ever tenacious and ever precise, finished this life on July 11, 2019. Cherished husband, father and grandfather, chemical engineer, craftsman, draftsman, and true maven of the arts and good food, he was born in Philadelphia in 1925. His parents, Sarah and Mendel, were immigrants from Russia. 

A gifted student, agile of mind and body, he excelled in his studies at Central High School, Philadelphia. He earned an ScB in chemical engineering from M.I.T. in 1946 while in officer training for the US Navy.  This was followed by an M.S. from Drexel University in 1954.
 

True love entered Maish's heart and he married Nancy in 1950.  Three children followed: Kenneth (Miguela Altiveros), Martha (Rob Slater), and Jonathan (Ginny).  Although beloved wife Nancy fought cancer courageously for five years, and died in 1969, Maish remained steadfast in the face of this tragedy, dedicated to maintaining devotion to family. 

Love returned in 1992, when Rita Merkin (deceased 2018) became his wife.  Maish and Rita enjoyed many happy years together in Philadelphia and Florida and enriched their later years with immersive cultural travel. They were enthusiastic supporters of music and the arts. Maish was a beloved stepfather to Rita’s daughters Susan Simon (David) Glassberg and Merrill Simon Johnston (Lester DeMund).
 

Maish's professional accomplishments were numerous.  He was an engineer at Allied Chemical and the Kuljian Corporation, and a plant manager at Baldwin-Ehret-Hill. In 1965 he joined Day and Zimmerman, a large construction and engineering firm.  In 1979 he was appointed Sr Vice President, Engineering, a position he held until his retirement in 1993. He was the first recipient of the eponymous ‘MAC’ award for excellence and integrity, created by the company in his honor.  

Maish will be remembered for his brilliant intellect and wide-ranging curiosity, his excellence at any task he tackled, his indomitable spirit in the face of adversity, and his devotion to those he loved.

He will be sorely missed by sister-in-law Mary Chomitz, children, sons and daughters in law, and grandchildren Ariana, Benjamin, Isaac, and Nancy Chomitz, and Daniel Simon Glassberg.

Remembrance in celebration of his long life will be held at a graveside service at Mt Sinai Cemetery, 1901 Bridge Street, Philadelphia 19124, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday July 17, followed by a luncheon.
