Mario M Rathle

Mario M. Rathle, long-time resident of Belmont, MIT alumnus, engineer, inventor; beloved husband of the late Nayla Rathle, dear uncle of Philip (Amadee), Michaella, and Nicholas; brother to the late Christian and Jean-Pierre M. Rathle; brother-in-law to Nevine (Alain) Marchiset, passed away on Sunday October 21, 2018 at the age of 88.

Mario was born in Alexandria Egypt on April 19, 1930 and immigrated to the United States in the early 1950s with his mother and brothers, making his home in Belmont. He worked as a mechanical engineer, receiving his Bachelor’s in Science in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alexandria, and a Masters in Science in Mechanical Engineering from MIT (class of 1959). Mario worked and traveled internationally, and obtained a Masters in Business Administration from Babson College (class of 1970), practicing business as well as technology.

He met his wife Nayla while living and working in Versailles in 1993. They were married in 1994 in France, and shortly thereafter moved back to their Belmont home on School Street. Mario was very close to his mother, his brothers, and his wife Nayla, and cared after all of them at various times in their moments of difficulty. In this last year of his life as he came to need more help himself, he relied on his close friend and confidant Tom Zellen, his friends Isaac and Mary Mehrez, and his nephews and niece (among others), who were all very dear to him.

Mario will be remembered for his wit, precision, and polish. He was a sharp thinker who loved to understand, explain, and improve the way things work. In his youth he was a versatile athlete, and in his sixties still biked to work. He will be dearly missed.

 A funeral mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church 770 Mt Auburn Street, Watertown on Saturday Oct 27th at 9:00 AM. A visitation will be held prior in Sacred Heart Church from 8:00 - 9:00 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Belmont Cemetery, Belmont.
