John Moyles Obituary

Moyles, John Christopher, Landscape Architect

March 10, 2018 John Christopher Moyles died unexpectedly while skiing in Stowe, Vermont. He was with his son, and close family friends. He was 56 years old.

Chris had a love of life and was dedicated to his family, his friends and his profession of Landscape Architecture.  His positive attitude and commitment to his community were inspirational to all and will have a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Chris was born and raised in Williamsburg, VA, is a graduate of Walsingham Academy, Virginia Commonwealth University where he received a BS in Plant Biology and the University of Virginia School of Architecture where he received his Masters in Landscape Architecture.

A passionate designer and craftsman, Chris worked tirelessly to enhance the public realm, enrich the profession, and deepen society’s awareness of landscape architecture. Chris was a Principal and Partner at Reed Hilderbrand, where he practiced for 18 years. His career began at the firms of Morgan Wheelock and Child Associates.

He left his mark on our environment in nationally recognized projects, including Long Dock Park, Beacon, NY; the Poetry Foundation, Chicago, IL; and Laguna Gloria, Austin, TX. Locally his significant works include planning and design projects at Phillips Academy Andover, Groton School and throughout Boston’s Seaport District. His works demonstrate a meticulous and conceptually rigorous joining of art, science, beauty, and durability in practice.

He is the recipient of many awards, including the American Society of Landscape Architects and Boston Society of Landscape Architects Award of Excellence for Design.  Earlier this year the Boston Society of Landscape Architects elected Chris to be its president. He had great aspirations for the Society and was highly respected in the design community in Boston.

Chris was a sports and outdoors enthusiast. He was a Belmont basketball league coach, enjoyed playing golf with his son Clay, camping with Clay’s Boy Scout troop, and hiking with family and friends in New England. He was a dedicated fan of the Washington Redskins and the University of Virginia Football and Basketball teams.

Surviving him are his wife, Carol Brower Moyles and son, Thomas Clayton “Clay” Moyles, his parents Thomas and Trudy Moyles from Williamsburg, VA, and in-laws Clayton and Dorothy Brower from Sun City, AZ.
